New York: Zones 3-7

New York’s climate varies widely across the state, with colder regions in the north and milder areas downstate. Here’s a closer look at the zones in New York and some shade-tolerant plants that will thrive in each:

  • Zone 3:

Found in the northernmost parts of New York, such as the Adirondack Mountains, where winter temperatures can drop to -40 to -30°F. These hardy, shade-tolerant plants are perfect for the coldest regions:

    • Hellebores (Helleborus spp.): Also known as Lenten roses, these evergreen perennials bloom in late winter or early spring, adding early color to shady spots.

    • Ferns: Varieties like Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) and Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum spp.) thrive in the cool, moist shade typical of Zone 3.

    • Astilbe (Astilbe spp.): With its feathery plumes of pink, white, or red flowers, Astilbe brightens up shady areas and thrives in the cooler conditions of Zone 3.

  • Zone 4:

  • Covers parts of the Adirondacks and other upstate regions, where winter temperatures range from -30 to -20°F. This zone is ideal for a variety of shade-tolerant plants:

    • Hostas (Hosta spp.): A staple in shade gardens, Hostas offer lush foliage in a range of colors and patterns, thriving in the cool, shaded areas of Zone 4.

    • Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spectabilis): Known for its delicate, heart-shaped flowers, Bleeding Heart adds charm to shady garden spots in spring and early summer.

    • Coral Bells (Heuchera spp.): Prized for their colorful foliage, Coral Bells add visual interest and texture to shaded garden areas.

  • Zone 5-6:

Found in central and western New York, including the Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley, and parts of the Catskills, where winter temperatures range from -20 to 0°F. These zones support a wide variety of shade-loving plants:

    • Rhododendrons (Rhododendron spp.): Known for their large, showy blooms, Rhododendrons thrive in the acidic, shaded soils typical of these zones.

    • Hydrangeas (Hydrangea spp.): With their large, colorful blooms, Hydrangeas add a splash of color to shaded areas in the temperate climate of Zone 5-6.

    • Ferns: Varieties like Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) and Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) add lush greenery to shaded gardens.

  • Zone 7:

Found in the southernmost parts of New York, including Long Island and New York City, where winter temperatures range from 0 to 10°F. This milder zone is perfect for a variety of shade-tolerant plants:

    • Camellias (Camellia spp.): With their glossy evergreen leaves and stunning winter and early spring flowers, Camellias bring year-round beauty to shaded garden spots.

    • Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum): With its silvery fronds and purple stems, this fern adds elegance to shaded areas in the warmer climate of Zone 7.

    • Azaleas (Rhododendron spp.): A classic choice for New York gardens, Azaleas offer vibrant blooms in spring and thrive in the acidic, shaded soils typical of Zone 7.
