Virginia: Zones 5-8

Virginia’s climate ranges from the cooler, mountainous regions in the west to the warmer coastal areas in the east. Here’s a closer look at the zones in Virginia and some shade-tolerant plants that will thrive in each:

  • Zone 5:

Found in the higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains, where winter temperatures can drop to -20 to -10°F. These hardy, shade-loving plants are perfect for the cooler regions:

    • Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spectabilis): Known for its delicate, heart-shaped flowers, Bleeding Heart thrives in the cool, shady spots typical of Zone 5.

    • Hellebores (Helleborus spp.): Also called Lenten roses, these evergreen perennials bloom in late winter or early spring, adding early color to shaded areas.

    • Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense): A native groundcover with heart-shaped leaves, Wild Ginger is perfect for adding lush greenery to shaded woodland gardens.

  • Zone 6:

Covers much of central Virginia, with winter temperatures ranging from -10 to 0°F. This zone is suitable for a variety of shade-tolerant plants:

    • Hostas (Hosta spp.): A staple in shade gardens, Hostas offer lush foliage in a variety of colors and patterns, thriving in the moderate climate of Zone 6.

    • Astilbe (Astilbe spp.): With its feathery plumes of pink, white, or red flowers, Astilbe brings bright color to shaded gardens and prefers the cool, moist soils typical of this zone.

    • Ferns: Varieties like Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum spp.) and Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) thrive in the damp, shaded areas, adding texture and elegance to your garden.

  • Zone 7:

Found in the eastern and southern parts of the state, including the Piedmont and coastal plains, where winter temperatures range from 0 to 10°F. This zone offers a slightly milder climate ideal for these shade-tolerant plants:

    • Camellias (Camellia spp.): These evergreen shrubs bloom in winter or early spring, providing stunning flowers that brighten up shaded gardens.

    • Rhododendrons (Rhododendron spp.): Known for their large, showy blooms, Rhododendrons thrive in the acidic, shaded soils of Zone 7.

    • Hydrangeas (Hydrangea spp.): With their large, colorful blooms, hydrangeas are a popular choice for shaded areas, especially in the humid climate of eastern Virginia.

  • Zone 8:

  • Found in the southeastern corner of Virginia, where winter temperatures range from 10 to 20°F. This warmer zone is perfect for a variety of shade-tolerant plants:

    • Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum): These trees offer stunning, colorful foliage and thrive in the milder climate of Zone 8.

    • Liriope (Liriope muscari): Also known as lilyturf, this hardy groundcover tolerates a variety of conditions, including shade, and produces spikes of lavender flowers.

    • Azaleas (Rhododendron spp.): These shrubs provide vibrant spring blooms and thrive in the dappled shade common in Zone 8 gardens.
